Why brunch on the Llŷn?

The Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales is known for its sweeping beaches, rugged coastal paths, and charming villages — and nothing sets you up for a day of adventure quite like a great breakfast (or Brecwast as we call it here in Wales).

From hearty ‘Full Welsh’ plates to delicate galettes and artisan bakes, the peninsula is full of cafés that capture its unique charm and character.

We’ve narrowed it down to five local favourites — places we’ve tried, loved, and think you’ll want to go back to again and again.

1. Caffi’r Felin (Felin Uchaf), between Porthor & Rhiw (map location)

Tucked away at the heart of Pen Llyn, Caffi’r Felin doesn’t just offer a serene and peaceful setting — it provides exquisite food, passionately made entirely from scratch.

Many of the fresh ingredients used are grown on site, or sourced seasonally and organically from local producers. Sarah & Aitana, who first made their mark with their now-famous supper clubs, revived the café to meet the demand for more of their inspiring home-cooked creations.

You can expect a colourful selection of hearty meals or light-bites & snacks, from Turkish-style eggs on freshly baked sourdough, fried eggs on grilled Welsh cheddar focaccia, to indulgent pear & hazelnut frangipane tarts. The menu changes constantly — one week you might find grapefruit & vanilla bean shortbread, the next a vibrant plate of colourful salads — which means there’s always something new to draw you back.

What makes Caffi’r Felin truly special is the atmosphere. Aitana and Sarah, along with their team, are some of the most warm and welcoming hosts you could meet — genuinely passionate about their craft and eager to share it.

The whole site of Felin Uchaf has a unique, calm energy: as well as the café, there are supper clubs, pizza nights, and storytelling evenings held in the iconic roundhouse, all set within the magical grounds that comprise this eclectic community of artisans & craftspeople, and who have created one of the most tranquil and inviting environments on the Llŷn Peninsula.

What to try:

  • Turkish-style eggs on in-house baked sourdough.
  • Fried eggs on grilled cheddar focaccia for something rich and satisfying.
  • Seasonal bakes such as the pear & hazelnut frangipane tart or grapefruit & vanilla bean shortbread.

2. Caffi Siop Plas (Plas Carmel), near Porthor/Whistling Sands (map location
Only a short distance up the road from Felin Uchaf you’ll find its perfect companion, Caffi Siop Plas — small in size but brimming with character, flavour, and authenticity.

Tucked inside Plas Carmel, it’s a hidden gem that puts a Welsh spin on a true French classic: the galette.

The visionary behind it all is Corentin — better known as Chef Coco — who trained at Crêpes au Logis in Brittany before bringing his skills and passion to the Llŷn. His genius? Taking the delicate French buckwheat galette and filling it with organic, locally sourced Welsh ingredients.

The result is something utterly unique to this corner of North Wales: a fusion of Breton technique and Welsh produce.

The café itself is small and unassuming from the outside, but step in and you’ll find a warm and welcoming space with a distinct personality.

Coco and his team are as friendly and hospitable as they come, and the atmosphere makes you feel instantly at home. It’s a favourite with cyclists spinning around the peninsula and an ideal pit-stop before heading to the famous Whistling Sands (Porthor) beach nearby.

What to try:

  • The traditional egg, ham and cheese galette — simple, authentic, and absolutely delicious.
  • Work your way through the ever-changing list of sweet and savoury fillings, each one showcasing Welsh produce at its best.
  • Pair it with a chilled glass of cidre for the most authentic French touch.

3. Caffi Ni, Nefyn (map location)
Caffi Ni is the place to go if you’re after a more traditional brunch experience, with hearty portions and a laid-back atmosphere.

Perched with gorgeous sea views, it’s perfectly placed for walkers tackling stretches of the Llŷn Coastal Path — and it’s also a popular stop for cyclists, whether you’re fuelling up along the coast or before a ride into the mountains.

What to try:

  • The Full Welsh Breakfast — generous, traditional, and always satisfying.
  • Ham, egg & chips — another classic, you just can’t beat.
  • If you’re after lighter options, try their range of freshly prepared sandwiches, ciabattas and jacket potatoes.

4. Buffers Café, Pwllheli Station (map location)
Don’t be fooled by its unassuming setting at Pwllheli Station — Buffers is one of the best places in town for a proper breakfast.

From bacon or sausage baps to Welsh rarebit or the full Welsh breakfast, the menu covers everything from grab-and-go bites to plates hearty enough to reset you after one too many Aperols at a summer BBQ the evening before.

It’s the kind of spot that works for everyone: travellers needing a quick snack before their train, families fuelling up for a day out, or adventurers getting ready for the coast and mountains.

Once you’ve filled up, you’re only a short stroll away from Pwllheli’s marina and seafront — a gentle way to walk it all off.

What to try:

  • A classic bacon or sausage bap if you’re short on time.
  • Welsh Rarebit — rich, cheesy, and always a winner.
  • The full Welsh Breakfast if you’re hungry enough to take on the day ahead.

5. Caffi Largo, Pwllheli (map location)
Just up the road from Buffers, Caffi Largo makes the most of its seafront location. It’s the perfect spot to grab a coffee and cake before a beach stroll, or to settle in for something more substantial.

The menu leans on hearty, home-cooked favourites — think full breakfasts, warm paninis, or jacket potatoes — all served in generous portions.

It’s a place that feels as popular with locals as it does with holidaymakers, which is always a good sign.

Add in the friendly, welcoming staff, and it’s no surprise Caffi Largo is often buzzing from morning through lunchtime.

What to try:

  • A coffee and slice of cake before or after a seaside walk.
  • The Full Breakfast for a hearty start to the day.
  • A warm panini or jacket potato for a simple, satisfying lunch.
